Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry. Drinkwater, a British playwright and poet, worked for an insurance company. In 1909 he became manager of the Birmingham Repertory Company, and his most successful plays included "Abraham Lincoln," "Mary Stuart," and "Bird in Hand."
